my neighbors wi-fi signal comes onto my property, which i recently discovered with my new ipod touch. Is it illegal for me to use it? there is no password or anything, so its not like im hacking. Oh, and will they be able to see that im using it? like will it show up on the history of their computer or anything? thanks!

It is illegal, or at least it was last time i checked. but there is no easy way for him finding out that YOU are using it. He probably won’t even realize that someone else is using his internet, unless he remembers specific websites that he did not go on. He won’t be able to see that you are using his internet, but he will be able to see the websites that you go on. I think that he can also see your IP address, but that could be any of his neighbors IP addresses. Hey, his fault for not putting a password!

If you actually take it as illegal or legal, it is pretty illegal, however why don’t you just go to your neighbor and tell him if you can use it?
Believe me, if it has no password or authentication, he will not be able to track you down. Even if he tracks you down, it will be by MAC address, which is pretty impossible to see who it is (Only if he works at CIA). The only thing he could do is block your access by MAC address.
Hope this Helps

It is legal if you ask them to use it
but illegal if you crack their password (if they have one)
if it has no password they are begging for it to be stolen or don’t care
JUST ASK em

nope its not illegal.
the worst thing that could happen is if they do find out (which probably wont happen) theyll make a password.
have fun on ffree wi-fi!

Okay…
Here’s the deal.
Officially it is NOT okay to connect to their wifi signal without letting them in on the secret. This is not because of any spooky thing you may do to their computer or the data on it, it’s because the phone company wants that $14.95 a month from you…
That’s officially. The “crime” if you can call it that is “theft of services”, and should they actualloy decide to hand you your @$$, you could be looking at a $200 fine.
Now for the reality of it all.
Go ahead and connect, and rest fully assured that any neighbor of yours who has not encrypted their signal, or put a password on the administrative login is NOT going to have any idea that you are connecting to their radio. That would require looking at the log files of the router, and that would be considerable more tedious and difficult than encrypting the network,, which they didn’t bother to do.

I don’t think it’s illegal unless you do something illegal while using their connection (like looking at their files, etc.). It’s kind of a gray legal area right now, but basically if a signal is open you can use it – just don’t do anything illegal while using it.
The only way they can know you are using it is if they log into their router and notice an extra computer there. Even then, without going to a lot of trouble, they won’t know your address. They’d have to be pretty computer savvy to find you. But if you get on there and start streaming a lotta HD movies and torrents, and clog up their bandwith, they might get pissed enough to call the ISP and eventually find you.
Good luck,
Donk
